Follow a series without checking back: new episodes download themselves, and you pick up where you stopped
The problem with following a series online
Following a weekly series on the web means remembering to check, hoping the episode is still up, and never quite knowing which one you were on. A download folder fixes the first two, but then you are managing files by hand: what's new, what's finished, which file was the half-watched one. Vidnip 2.0 keeps all of that inside the app.
1. Subscribe once
- Click Subscriptions in Vidnip's sidebar.
- Paste the full link of the channel, playlist or collection page — not a single episode — and click Add.
- Vidnip reads the current list and uses it as the baseline. Only episodes published after this moment download automatically; nothing from the back catalogue is pulled in. Want the older episodes too? Use the batch download on the same link and tick what you want.
2. What happens when a new episode appears
- It joins the download queue and you get a notification: New in "…". When each episode finishes, a Download finished notification follows: click it and Vidnip 2.0 opens Videos with that episode selected. The notification also has a Play button.
- The file lands in your download folder inside a folder named after the subscription — one folder per series, so the Finder side stays tidy. That is the default in Vidnip 2.0; the switch Save new episodes of a subscription into a folder named after it in Settings turns it off if you prefer everything in one place, as in 1.x.
- Subtitles follow your usual settings: the preferred language is embedded and saved as an
.srtnext to the episode when the site offers one.
3. Watch in the Videos section
Click Videos in the sidebar and group by source (subscription or playlist): in the sort menu, set Group to By Source. Each series gets its own group with its episodes in order, each with a cover, length and a thin progress line.
- Unwatched first. Filter to unwatched or partly watched and only what's left is shown. An episode counts as watched once you reach its last 10 seconds.
- Pick up where you stopped. Double-click and it resumes; the position is saved as you watch and when you close the window. Right-click to play from the beginning.
- Everything else stays as it was. Your download history is still there, under Download Records in the Videos section; the library sorts by date, title, length or last played, and search covers all of it.
4. Keep watching on the iPhone
Vidnip for iPhone is the free companion app, and version 2.0 brings the series along:
- Mac › Videos lists what the Mac downloaded, grouped by series, with a Continue Watching row at the top — the half-finished episode is one tap away.
- At home, tap to stream from the Mac; it starts where the Mac stopped. Use Download to iPhone for the episodes you want on the train — the copy plays offline and still starts from your place.
- Positions sync both ways, so finishing an episode on the phone marks it as watched on the Mac too; the last device to write wins. Offline progress is sent the next time the phone sees the Mac.
Common questions
Does subscribing download all the old episodes?
No. When you add a subscription, Vidnip takes the current list as the baseline and only downloads episodes published after that. To get the back catalogue, run a batch download on the same link and tick the episodes you want.
Where do new episodes go?
Into your download folder, inside a folder named after the subscription — one folder per series. That is the default in Vidnip 2.0; a switch in Settings puts them straight into the download folder instead, as in earlier versions. Either way, group the Videos section by source and the episodes sit under the series.
Do I have to keep Vidnip open?
Vidnip keeps running in the background by default when you close the window, and checks at launch and then every 3 hours. Turn on launch at login and it checks after a restart too. The Mac does have to be on and awake.
Is this part of the free trial?
No. Series Subscriptions are a full-version feature: the first 3 downloads are free and a one-time purchase unlocks the rest, including subscriptions. Everything else in Vidnip works in the trial.
How does Vidnip know which episodes I've watched?
In Vidnip 2.0 the built-in player saves your position every few seconds and when you close the window. An episode is marked as watched once you reach its last 10 seconds. The Videos section can filter to unwatched or partly watched episodes, and Vidnip for iPhone 2.0 shares the same positions.
Can I watch the new episode on my iPhone?
Yes, with Vidnip for iPhone 2.0. On the same Wi‑Fi as the Mac, tap an episode to stream it, or choose Download to iPhone to copy it over for offline viewing. Both start where you stopped on the Mac, and your progress goes back to the Mac. Older versions of the iPhone app play the episodes but don't track positions.
