Vidnip for iPhone
The iPhone app is a companion to Vidnip for Mac. It sends links to your Mac, shows and controls the Mac's download tasks, and gives you three ways to use finished videos: download to the phone, stream from the Mac, or remote-control playback on the Mac. It is free on the App Store: Vidnip for iPhone.
Requirements
- Vidnip for Mac 1.7.0 or later, with "Allow iPhone to connect over the local network" turned on (sidebar → iPhone, or Settings → iPhone).
- iPhone with iOS 17 or later, on the same Wi-Fi as the Mac.
- The Mac's license state applies: while the Mac still has free downloads or is activated, the phone can add tasks.
Pairing
- On the Mac: click iPhone in the sidebar → turn on "Allow iPhone to connect over the local network" → click Show Pairing Code.
- On the iPhone: Mac tab → pick your Mac → enter the six-digit code. The code is valid for 5 minutes and is voided after 5 wrong attempts.
- From then on the phone connects automatically whenever both are on the same Wi-Fi. To remove a phone, use the device list on the Mac.
Sending links
Paste a link in the Tasks tab, or use the Share sheet from Safari or any app and choose Vidnip. The Mac detects the videos; you confirm which one to download on the phone. If the Mac is unreachable, the link is kept and sent the next time you open the app.
Downloading to the phone
Transfers run while the app is in the foreground. Switching away or locking the phone pauses them; they resume from where they stopped when you come back. Every file is verified with SHA-256 before it appears in the Library. Files in the Library are not included in iCloud backup.
Troubleshooting
- The Mac is not found. Check that the Mac is running Vidnip 1.7.0 or later with "Allow iPhone to connect over the local network" on, that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, and that the iPhone has the Local Network permission (iOS Settings → Vidnip). Some routers have "AP isolation" or "client isolation", which blocks discovery; turn it off or use the Mac's address manually.
- "Incompatible version". Update whichever side is older.
- "Unreachable" after the Mac slept. Wake the Mac; the phone reconnects on its own.
- A video will not stream. MKV and WebM cannot be played natively on iPhone. Use "Convert to MP4" on the media page; it is usually a quick remux.
- Casting to a TV. Tap AirPlay in the player. The TV must be on the same Wi-Fi as the phone.
